SMTA - Sewing Machine Trade Association MemberThe Sewing Machine Trade Association is a broad based organisation representing the interest of High Street retailers of household sewing machines and haberdashery, suppliers of machinery to the clothing manufacturing industry and trade distributors. We are recognised by Local and National Government organisations, educational institutions and other trade associations as the authoritative voice of our industry. Our members are established throughout the United Kingdom and we also have a number of associated members from overseas. Members of the SMTA are pledged to offer a courteous and helpful service to the public and to co-operate nationally with each other to assist clients who may have made purchases from other members of our Association. We recognise that some modern household machines are equipped with a number of important features that might require a more detailed explanation and for clients it is important to have direct contact with a sales person to explain these feature and benefits. Many of our members provide instructional classes to master the intricacies of the equipment and the extended use of sewing machines. The aim of our organisation is to provide a real alternative to “box-discounters” who offer no service or support and have little training or knowledge. Contact Information: The history of the SMTA. Our trade association was established in the 1930’s by a group of sewing machine dealers whose livelihood in part was supplying machinery to garment factories. At that time most sewing machinery originated from the USA and Germany and distribution throughout the United Kingdom was a “closed-shop” of company branches. Dealers were not recognised and it was impossible for them to obtain machines and more importantly spare parts. Thanks to the dedication of our “founding father” David Rose, a London based dealer who petitioned dealers throughout the country over a number of years, our Association was founded to force machine manufacturers to change their monopoly practices.
