The latest Government advice is that to keep each other safe and minimise the spread of COVID19 we should be wearing face coverings in places where social distancing is not possible, such as on public transport and in shops.
The Big Community Sew campaign was launched last week to ensure that everyone in the UK has access to such face coverings. And to ensure that we preserve vital supplies of medical grade masks for the NHS and care workers.
The idea is simple; there are millions of sewing machines in homes across the UK, which means there will be one in almost every neighbourhood across the country. We’re asking those people who have a sewing machine, or who can sew by hand, to check on their friends and neighbours, find out who needs a face covering, and make them for them.
So far the response has been incredible with people making and donating face coverings in their thousands.
But we are aware that in some communities people will not have access to a sewing machine, or will not be able to afford the fabric, thread or elastic needed. So we are asking you specifically if you can help by making face coverings for those most vulnerable in our society.
We will issue you with pre-cut fabric and elastic as well as sewing instructions for an effective face covering that what we believe is the simplest and easiest to make. Each one should take no longer than 3 minutes to sew. We would like you to sign up to make them up in batches of 50. Because of the critical nature of this effort we would like you to agree to sew your 50, (you could do more than 1 batch of 50 if youre able) in no more than 1 week.
If you can help please email your name, address, mobile No and email address to email@example.com and we will rush out your sewing pack.
