We are very happy this week at Hobkirk's to see the sunshine is finally here! Yipee!
This beautiful weather has inspired us to come up with some sewing ideas to brighten up the home with vibrant colours and patterns....
....a very simple and easy way of doing this is to add your own personal range of cushions to be used around the home or even in the garden. They are so easy to make and we have a vast collection of materials to choose from in store from zesty lemons and limes to pastel pinks and purples!
Here's how to make your simple summertime cushion....
You will need:
- Sewing machine (optional as the cushion can be made by hand)
- Cushion pad/stuffing
- Matching thread
- Decorative items i.e. fringing, tassels, buttons (optional)
1.) Measure the cushion pad (if using one), place the tape measure seam to seam and add a seam allowance of 0.5" (12 mm) to all edges.
2.) Cut out 2 pieces of fabric to the chosen size including the seam allowance.
3.) Place the 2 pieces of fabric with right sides together. Pin and stitch around the 4 corners and 3 sides, leaving an opening in the centre of the remaining side big enough to insert the cushion pad/stuffing. Fasten the ends of the threads securely.
4.) Turn the cover right side out and insert the cushion pad/required amount of stuffing.
5.) Turn under the raw edges of the opening in line with the remainder of the seam and slipstitch.
6.) If required, stitch braid, lace or fringing to the right side using a small backstitch.
